Pre-qualifying for a mortgage, before you actually begin house hunting, gives you advantages.

It takes some of the pressure of of the time-frame for the home purchase. After you find the home you want to buy, and after you sign a purchase agreement, you may have only a few weeks to come up with a mortgage before the closing date.

Pre-qualifying also makes your offer to buy look stronger. This can be an advantage if other buyers are making offers at the same time.
